Akohara Retreat Introduces a New Collection of Spaces, One Year After Opening
A thoughtful expansion that deepens the retreat’s connection to Balinese tradition, river life, and wellness across the valley.
Buahan, Bali, Indonesia – One year since opening on 1 March 2025, Akohara Retreat is preparing to unveil a new collection of spaces shaped by guest feedback and a deeper invitation into Balinese tradition. These additions expand the retreat’s places to gather, dine, and restore, with more touchpoints that bring guests closer to the river, the forest, and the rituals of everyday life. From a hilltop Hospitality Lounge at Akohara’s highest point, to riverside cooking reached by a bridge from HARA Wellness, and a new Valley Shala set across the valley with full views back to the retreat, this next collection continues Akohara’s story with care and intention.

Hospitality Lounge
Located at the highest point of Akohara, the Hospitality Lounge becomes a new place to meet, share time, and begin the day. It brings together a cafe and lounge, a gift shop, and a conference room with co working space, designed with the same warmth and detail that define the retreat. Whether guests arrive for coffee, conversation, or a focused hour, the feeling is effortless, welcoming, and connected to the Akohara family spirit.
Warung by the River
Set at the foot of the retreat, Warung by the River is reached by crossing the bridge from HARA Wellness, with the river guiding the way. Here, authentic Balinese cooking is served in an open air setting shaped by timber, breeze, and the surrounding green. It is a simple, soulful way of dining, where flavour carries the memory of home kitchens and village tables.
Traditional Balinese Cooking Class in a Paon
Near the riverside warung, guests will be welcomed into a traditional Balinese cooking class held in an authentic paon, a Balinese kitchen where daily meals are prepared with fire, spice, and instinct. This is a hands on invitation into local cooking traditions, from preparation to the shared table. The setting is built to feel true to daily life, with a sense of togetherness at its heart.
Valley Shala
Set across the valley, the Valley Shala opens to sweeping views back toward Akohara Retreat, allowing guests to see the full contour of the land and its layered greenery. Designed for yoga and guided wellness sessions, it offers an open air setting where movement and breath feel naturally held by the landscape. At certain hours, the light changes slowly across the valley, turning the shala into a space of presence and calm.
Tree House
Set across the valley, the Tree House creates a secluded lookout where Akohara becomes the view. When visibility allows, the horizon reveals a line of seven mountains, and sunset settles over the retreat in soft gold. It is a place to linger above the forest, with time stretching a little longer at the edge of day.
Sauna, Ice Bath, and Heated Whirlpool
A new thermal wellness area will introduce a restorative sequence of heat, cool, and release through a sauna, ice bath, and heated whirlpool. Designed as a ritual rather than a facility, it supports recovery in a way that feels elemental and unforced. Each step invites the body back into balance, guided by simple contrasts.
Purification and Pancoran
Akohara will introduce a dedicated purification area and pancoran, shaped around water as a place of renewal. Rooted in Balinese tradition, this space is designed for cleansing and reflection, guided by the presence and movement of water. It offers guests a deeper connection to one of Bali’s most meaningful rituals.
JIHWA Patio
JIHWA will expand with an upper floor dining setting, creating a new perspective within the restaurant’s world. From here, the view opens to the valley and looks directly over the heated rainforest infinity pool. It is designed for slower meals and long evenings, where the setting becomes part of the flavour.
“Phase Two is a natural continuation of what Akohara was always meant to become,” says Made Artawan, General Manager. “We are creating more places for guests to gather, learn, and restore, while keeping the retreat’s heart anchored in Buahan, its traditions, and the land that holds us.”
